Series Record: Ga. Southern leads 82-18
Storylines: Georgia Southern goes head-to-head with the top team in the Southern Conference standings this weekend. The Eagles, who have not lost back-to-back games all season, will square off with the Davidson Wildcats at Wilson Field for a three-game set beginning on Friday. GSU is sitting at 3-3 in the league after rallying twice to defeat Appalachian State two games to one last weekend. The Wildcats are off to their best start in league play since 2000 and are 9-1 over their last 10 outings. Davidson is hosting its third-straight SoCon series and is in the midst of a 15-game homestand.
Series History: Georgia Southern holds an 82-18 edge in the 100 game all-time series and has won 16-straight meetings, including a series sweep in their last visit to Davidson. The Eagles are 26-9 in Davidson, N.C. and the last loss came at Wilson Field on April 20, 2008. GSU swept the series a year ago in Statesboro; winning 6-4, 3-2, 9-4. The series opened in 1954 with a 3-1 Eagle victory and the two teams would meet 13 times before meeting in 1993 as members of the Southern Conference.
Team Scope
Ga. Southern: Georgia Southern is just one win away from their 20th victory of the season. The Eagles can pick that up in the series opener on Friday. A year ago it took GSU 31 games to pick up their 20th win. The 2009 and 2011 NCAA Regional squads won their 20th game in games number 27 and 33, respectively. The Eagles have been buoyed by their fourth ranked offense, which averages 8.4 runs per games, and the nation's best 35 long balls. GSU is 14-2 when hitting one or more home runs in a game and 10-0 when hitting two or more homers. The Eagles have hit 35 home runs this season, three more than the 2013 team recorded in 59 games a year ago, and are led by
Aaron Mizell's nine homers.
Davidson: All 14 of Davidson's wins have come at Wilson Field, where they are 14-4 this season. The Wildcats have jumped out to a 5-1 record after sweeping The Citadel and taking the three-game series from Wofford two games to one. Davidson has been red hot, winning nine-straight games between March 8 and March 21 and 11 of their last 12 contests. The Wildcats are coming off of a 3-2 win over Duke on Tuesday and boast three of the top-10 hitters in the conference. Sam Foy is tied for third with a .378 batting average and has six doubles and three home runs on the year.
Who's Hot: Ben Morgan went 8 for 18 with six RBI and four runs scored in his last five games. Morgan delivered the go-ahead runs in Sunday's eighth-inning rally and also homered in the contest. ... Ryan Lowe has eight hits in his last 17 at-bats, including two hits in four at-bats against Duke on Tuesday.
Connection Junction: Junior righthander
Will Middour's brother Thomas played four seasons for the Davidson Wildcats from 2007-10. Davidson has three players that hail from the state of Georgia. Tyler Agard (Alpharetta, Ga.), Lee Miller (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jonathan Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga.).
