Series Record: North Florida leads 9-8
Storylines: Georgia Southern hits the road for eight of their next 10 contests starting on Tuesday, when the Eagles travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on the North Florida Ospreys at 6 p.m. GSU has played 19 of their 25 games at home this season and are 3-3 in their six road contests. Tuesday's contest will wrap up the 2014 home-and-home series between the two squads. The Eagles won the first meeting 13-1 in Statesboro on March 11. GSU jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a fourth inning homer from
Aaron Mizell. Mizell homered twice in the contest and
Eric Alonzo picked up the win after tossing four scoreless frames and striking out three batters.
Series History: North Florida holds a one-game edge in the 17-game all-time series after Georgia Southern won the first meeting in 2014 13-1. The Ospreys hold a 5-2 advantage in Jacksonville, Fla., with the Eagles last win at Harmon Stadium coming in 2008. UNF has won seven of the last 10 meetings, including five-straight from March 2, 2011 to March 4, 2012. GSU won six of the first eight meetings when the series started in 2006 and swept the 2007 and 2008 meetings.
Team Scope
Ga. Southern: Georgia Southern is just one win away from their 20th victory of the season. The Eagles can pick that up on Tuesday when they travel to North Florida. A year ago it took GSU 31 games to pick up their 20th win. The 2009 and 2011 NCAA Regional squads won their 20th game in games number 27 and 33, respectively. The Eagles have been buoyed by their fourth ranked offense, which averages 8.5 runs per games, and the long ball. GSU is 14-1 when hitting one or more home runs in a game and 10-0 when hitting two or more homers. The Eagles have hit 34 home runs this season, two more than the 2013 team recorded in 59 games a year ago, and are led by
Aaron Mizell's nine homers.
North Florida: North Florida has gone 6-3 since last meeting Georgia Southern on March 11. The Ospreys are 4-2 in A-Sun play after series wins over USC-Upstate and Northern Kentucky. UNF has five games against teams from the state of Georgia this week with four played in Georgia. After hosting the Eagles, the Ospreys will travel to Savannah State and Mercer. UNF is 8-3 at home this season but just 4-8 away from Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys are hitting .304 with 14 home runs and hold a 4.45 team ERA. They finished the 2013 campaign with 40 wins and advanced to a NCAA Regional in the postseason.
Who's Hot: Ben Morgan went 8 for 19 with six RBI and five runs scored in five games last week. Morgan delivered the go-ahead runs in Sunday's eighth-inning rally and also homered in the contest. ... Drew Weeks continues to hit for Head Coach Smoke Laval and is hitting .462 with two home runs and 15 RBI. Weeks holds a 31-game hit streak and has 14 multi-hit games.
Connection Junction: Georgia Southern has two players that hail from the state of Florida.
Dalton Busby is from Bradenton, Fla. and attended the State College of Florida before transferring to Georgia Southern.
Byron Yelverton hails from Ponte Vedra, Fla., which is just 10 miles from the North Florida campus. The Ospreys have one player from Georgia in freshman catcher Blake Voyles.
