STATESBORO, Ga. - Josh Wirsu struck out a career-high seven batters and helped the Georgia Southern Eagles get back in the win column with a 14-5 win over the Southern Illinois Edwardsville Cougars on Saturday.
A night after the offense tallied a season-low five hits, Georgia Southern recorded 15 hits and posted double digit runs for the fourth time this season to help the Eagles improve to 8-2 on the year. All nine starters recorded a hit and five had multi-hit outings. Stryker Brown went two for four at the plate and drove in a pair of runs and scored three runs.
Wirsu allowed two runs in the first inning on a Keaton Wright single and a dropped pop fly by the first baseman Ryan Cleveland but settled in to earn his second win of the season. Wirsu (2-1) held Southern Illinois Edwardsville (2-7) scoreless over the next five innings and allowed just five hits and two walks on 92 pitches.
"Josh gave us a nice effort. I thought he got better as the night went, and he really settled in and got into a nice rhythm," Head Coach Rodney Hennon said. "He did what he had to do and gave our offense a chance to eventually make some things happen."
GSU rallied from the two-run deficit and tied the game in the second inning. Garrett Chapman drove in the first run and later in the inning scored on a wild pitch. Chapman's single extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
GSU took the lead on a two-out single off the bat of Ben Morgan in the fourth inning. The Eagles exploded for 11 runs over the next three innings. GSU took advantage of three combined errors and tallied 11 hits in those three innings.
"I thought that maybe early we might have still been pressing in a few at-bats, but once we got a lead guys seemed to loosen up," Hennon said. "We took some good swings and hit some balls hard."
Evan Martens allowed just two runs through the first three innings but left in the fifth inning after allowing a two-run double to Brown. Martens (0-2) allowed six runs – two earned – on five hits in his second start of the season.
Eric Alonzo tossed two perfect frames in relief of Wirsu and struck out two batters.
"I thought that was the best that Eric has thrown the ball so far this year. He was really sharp with all his pitches tonight," Hennon said.
Baseball concludes the four-game weekend tomorrow against SIUE and Ohio. The Eagles will face SIUE again at 1:30 p.m. and Ohio at 5 p.m.
