RICHMOND, Va. - Georgia Southern pitcher Jason Richman was named one of the 2014 Tom Walter/Pete Frates College Baseball Inspiration Award Winners.
Richman, who found out his mother had passed away after the opening round loss in the Southern Conference Tournament, decided to remain with the team and helped spark the Eagles to a five-game win streak and a SoCon Tournament Title. He went on to be named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Richman appeared in all six of GSU's tournament games and allowed just one run over 13.1 innings in what coach Hennon called "one of the most amazing performances I have ever seen."
Richman posted a 5-1 record with a 1.20 ERA in 89.2 innings during the 2014 season and struck out 78 batters to just 16 walks. He appeared in 47 games with one start and tallied three saves.
Other winners of the award include former GSU assistant coach and current Bethune-Cookman head coach Jason Beverlin, who was diagnosed with toxic epidermal necrolysis which has a 30-to-40 percent mortality rate. Beverlin spent three weeks recovering at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. before being able to return to coach the Wildcats last season.
