Nora El-Shami Scores Unassisted In The First Half
Statesboro, Ga. – The Eagles battled to a 1-1 tie against Texas State from Eagle Field on the campus of Georgia Southern University. In total, Georgia Southern had 12 shots, 7 of which were by Nora El-Shami. Cori Dulmage added 4 shots on the night. In goal, Katie Merson made 8 saves while allowing 1 goal. The Eagles move to 9-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the Sunbelt Conference while Texas State is now 10-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the Sunbelt Conference.
"I thought we played hard and we came out with a lot of passion and a lot of energy," commented Head Coach Brian Dunleavy. "After a tough patch on the road it was nice to see that resiliency. The first half we created good chances and kept the ball moving fast. Texas State is a good team so I am happy with the result, but even happier about the performance."
Nora El-Shami broke the scoring open in the 15th minute when she collected a ball off a cross, took a turn, and struck it left footed from six yards out to find the back of the net. The tally marked the first goal in 310 minutes of play for the Eagles.
In the 45th minute, Lynsey Curry knotted the game at 1-1 just before the end of the first half. A failed clearance by the Eagles allowed Curry to slip a ball through a small window of Eagle defenders from 12 yards out. Dunleavy remarked, "It was a little unfortunate with their goal right before the end of the half with 10 seconds left. I was disappointed with that lack of focus, but other than that lapse I cannot fault anything."
After a tie score at the end of regulation, the Eagles played two additional golden-goal periods of 10 minutes each, however, neither team was able to capitalize during extra time.
The Eagles look ahead to Sunday at 1 p.m. when they battle Appalachian State on Senior Day. Senior Day Festivities will begin at 12:40 where a total of 8 seniors will be honored for their contributions to the Eagles. In addition, the game will serve as the GATA game for women's soccer. Student-athletes are invited out to Eagle Field to support the team as they push for a high seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
