STATESBORO, Ga. - 608 and 334. That is the number of days since Georgia Southern baseball student-athletes Will Middour and Hunter Thomas, respectively, last played in a game.
Both have had Feb. 14-16 circled on their calendars for a long time after suffering season-ending injuries. Those are the dates of the Eagles opening weekend series at Georgia, and the first chance for both to get back on the field.
Will Middour has known since before the 2012 season that he would eventually need surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament, more commonly known as Tommy John Surgery. Middour decided to put off the surgery and compete in 2012.
"I found out I was hurt, and I definitely did not want to get surgery. I had already gone through the fall and my arm felt like it was in good enough shape that I could get through the year," said Middour.
Middour posted a 3-3 record with a 3.60 ERA in 60.0 innings in 11 starts that season. He started the year off in the bullpen before eventually working his way into the weekend rotation. Middour made his final appearance on May 26, 2012 in the Southern Conference Tournament against Elon. He allowed two runs off of five hits over six innings to help the Eagles advance to the SoCon Championship game after a 10-7 victory.
"I had surgery in the fall of the 2013 season, and I knew that I wasn't going to be able to come back until this year. It was hard having to sit out that season. It was awesome when they were doing well, but I wanted to be out there to help them," Middour said about missing the 2013 campaign.
Thomas was an opening day starter in 2013 and was off to a good start hitting .273 with three doubles and six RBIs before breaking his ankle in game six of the season. He drew a walk and went 0 for 2 in his final game on Feb. 24, 2013 against Indiana.
"I felt real good through the Georgia series and Florida. I was real excited to keep playing the rest of the year but it ended shortly for me, but I think I am in a better place now then I was."
Both worked hard through their rehabs and were able to practice with the team in the fall. Their preparation for the upcoming season continues this weekend when they compete in the first intrasquad scrimmages of the spring, but neither can wait until the season starts on Feb. 14.
"I have been thinking about it since I got surgery," said Middour. "I am really excited about it. I have to not think about it sometimes."
"I am real excited. I should be more excited than anybody else should. I feel like I am further along than I was last year, and that I am a better player then I was," said Thomas.
