Eagles Avoid Sweep with Offensive Outburst

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Eagles salvaged a game in their final home Southern Conference series at J.I. Clements Stadium and won 13-9 over the Furman Paladins on Senior Day.
Georgia Southern (25-23, 13-14 SoCon) answered every Furman (26-20, 12-15 SoCon) run-scoring inning and scored at least a run in every inning but the first and seventh innings. The Eagles outscored the Paladins 8-4 over the first three frames and tallied four more runs over the middle three frames.
Chris Myers (1-1) struck out Will Muzika in the fourth inning to strand a runner at third base and faced the minimum in the fifth inning to earn his first win of the season. Myers got a double play to erase a lead off error in Taylor Johnson and struck out Paul Nitto to conclude his 1.1 innings of relief.
Jacques de Gruy (2-2) surrendered seven runs over 2.2 innings and took the loss. The righthander allowed six hits and three walks in his second start of the year.
Furman started the scoring with three runs in the top of the second. Greg Harrison doubled down the left field line and scored from third base on a wild pitch. After Alex Abrams singled, Chris Ohmstede hit a two-run homer over the wall in left field for his 10th long ball of the season.
GSU batted around in the bottom half of the frame and scored four runs off of four hits. Zac Lenns drove in the first run with a ground out. Ben Morgan drove in a run with a double before Streicher beat out a double play at second base allowing Brent Pugh to drive in a run with a ground out. Scooter Williams plated the final run with a double to right field.
After the Paladins scored a run in the top of the third, the Eagles tallied four more runs in the bottom half of the frame. GSU batted around after Lenns got things started with a two-out double. Kyle Streicher doubled in the first two runs in the inning, and Robbie Dodds plated the final two with a single.
T.D. Davis gave the Eagles a 10-6 lead in the fifth inning with his 11th home run of the season. Davis wrapped a two-run homer around the foul pole in left field. Williams followed with a home run to right field in the sixth inning. The senior outfielder hit his second long ball in as many days to the right of the Jack Stallings Field sign.
The Eagles answered a two-run eighth inning with a single run in the bottom half of the frame. Chase Griffin drove in Williams with a base hit to right field.
Baseball will return to action next weekend at Clemson. The three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium gets underway Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The series continues with a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday. Notes: The game was moved from its original 1:30 p.m. start time to allow for the field to dry after heavy rain throughout the morning... Eight of the nine spots in the Georgia Southern batting order tallied a hit.
