STATESBORO, Ga. - The Furman Paladins took game two and the series from the Georgia Southern Eagles with a 5-3 win in 11 innings on Saturday.
Georgia Southern (24-23, 12-14 SoCon) rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning and forced extra innings. Chase Griffin led off the frame with a double and scored three batters later on a Tyler Avera single. Kyle Streicher plated the tying run in Robbie Dodds with a sacrifice fly. Matt Solter coaxed a fly out from Scooter Williams to strand two base runners.
Furman (26-19, 12-14 SoCon) broke open a 3-3 tie in the 11th inning on a two-run homer by Chris Ohmstede. The game-winning home run was his ninth of the season and scored a lead off single by Paul Nitto.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the 10th inning but were unable to score a run after Brant Masters (1-0) recorded an out to the only batter he faced and picked up the win after Furman took the lead in the top of the 11th. Jacques de Gruy (S, 1) tossed a scoreless bottom of the 11th and struck out a batter for his first save of the season.
Kyle Rowe (3-3) took the loss after allowing the two runs in the 11th inning. Rowe allowed four runs and struck out one batter over 1.1 innings.
Starter Jason Richman threw a quality start but was on the hook for the loss before the Eagles rallied in the ninth inning. Richman allowed three runs and scattered eight hits over seven innings. Alex Abrams allowed just one run on two hits over six innings in a solid start for the Paladins.
Furman started the scoring with a run in the second inning and added a second run in the fourth. Greg Harrison scored the game's first run on a ground ball double play off the bat of Ohmstede. Andrew MacLatchie doubled in a run in the fourth inning and scored Greg Harrison with two outs.
GSU pulled within a run on a solo home run off the bat of Scooter Williams in the sixth inning. Williams, who pinched hit for Brent Pugh, hit his first long ball of the season and his third of his career.
MacLatchie answered the home run with a homer of his own in the seventh inning. MacLatchie hit a lead off homer over the Ranco Tents sign in left field.
The series concludes tomorrow with a 5 p.m. start. The baseball team will honor its seniors prior to the start of the game. Sunday is also Junior Eagle Club Sunday Funday. All JEC members can run the bases after the game.
