Eagles Even Road Swing with Win Tuesday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Georgia Southern pitching stranded 12 runs and scattered 13 hits to complete the season-series sweep of the Jacksonville Dolphins with an 8-4 win on Tuesday night.
Georgia Southern (19-9) got good pitching from five different guys to improve to 15-2 when holding an opponent to five runs or less. Sam Howard pitched the Eagles out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning. Howard struck out two batters and got a pop up after allowing two hits and a walk.
Drew Johnson (1-0) earned the win after GSU struck for three runs in the sixth inning to break open a 4-3 ball game. Johnson allowed one run on four hits over two innings. The lefthander recorded four-straight outs after allowing back-to-back singles to start the fourth inning.
Adam Maxon (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs over 2.1 innings. Maxon struck out four batters and allowed six hits in his first start of the season. The righthander allowed single runs in the first and second innings before surrendering two runs in the third inning.
Jacksonville (10-19) out hit the Eagles 13-to-10. Braddock Rowe recorded four singles, two runs and a RBI to pace the Dolphins. Zach Houck and Nate Ricci both had two singles. Ben Morgan recorded two hits and three RBIs for Georgia Southern. T.D. Davis also added two hits and scored a run.
The Eagles opened the game with a first inning run off the bat of Chase Griffin. Griffin plated a lead off single by Scooter Williams with a double down the right field line. Griffin was thrown out at the plate a batter later trying to score a second run on Davis' single to left field.
Georgia Southern went ahead 2-0 in the second inning on a two-out single by Brent Pugh before Jacksonville tied the ball game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame. Rowe and Josh Baker tallied back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Rowe scored on a passed ball, and Baker crossed the plate on a Ricci single.
Georgia Southern took a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Robbie Dodds drove in a lead off single by Morgan with a base hit to right field, and Griffin, who reached after being hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch.
The Eagles broke open the contest with a sixth-run sixth inning, scoring three runs to take a 7-3 lead. Morgan plated all three runs with a two-out triple to left center field. GSU loaded the bases with a pair of fielder's choices and a walk. Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning before both bullpens pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Georgia Southern remains on the road and returns to Southern Conference play at Appalachian State. The Eagles begin a three-game weekend series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The series concludes with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. game on Sunday. All three games can be heard on the Georgia Southern Radio Network and coverage begins 30 minutes before first pitch.
