The Citadel Completes Three-Game Sweep of Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga. - Austin Mason held the Georgia Southern Eagles to two runs over eight innings as The Citadel Bulldogs completed a three-game sweep with an 8-2 win on Sunday.
The Citadel (20-17, 9-6 SoCon) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a three-run third inning and added four runs over the final four innings to earn their first weekend series sweep of the season.
Mason (3-2) held Georgia Southern (21-14, 10-8 SoCon) scoreless until the seventh inning when the Eagles scored a two-out run on a throwing error from the shortstop. The run was the first in the series for GSU.
Eagle starter Jason Richman lasted just three innings and was handed the loss after allowing four runs on five hits. Richman (4-3) walked four and struck out none.
Michael McClellan was the second Eagle to make his Georgia Southern debut this weekend and tallied his first career hit in the fifth inning.
Bo Thompson drove in a run in the first inning to hand the Bulldogs an early lead. Thompson plated Mason Davis with a one-out single.
Joe Jackson's two-out double in the third inning started a rally that sent five batters to the plate before Richman got Brett Hines to ground out to end the frame. With the bases loaded, Johnathan Stokes drew a walk to score the first run of the inning. Calvin Orth followed and plated two more runs with a single. Orth later homered in the sixth inning to put The Citadel ahead 5-0.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-0 lead. Drew DeKerlegand plated a lead off double in Hughston Armstrong with a double off the wall in right field. Johnathan Stokes followed with a sacrifice fly to score Thompson, who walked with one out in the inning.
Georgia Southern had a pair of lead off base runners reach base in the seventh and eighth innings and both later scored. T.D. Davis singled to start the seventh and scored on the error, while Tyler Avera recorded an infield single in the eighth and scored on a ground out by Ben Morgan.
Joe Jackson scored the final run of The Citadel's contest with a ninth inning home run off of Clint Taylor. Taylor bounced back after walking Thompson to retire the side with three fly outs.
Baseball will remain at home with two mid-week games against Mercer and Kennesaw State before traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. to face Western Carolina. The Eagles will face the Bears Tuesday and the Owls Wednesday. Both games start at 6 p.m.
