Men’s Basketball Opens SoCon Tournament Against Wofford

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball enters the third season on Friday morning against Wofford in the opening game of the 2013 SoCon Tournament. GSU’s 20th trip to the SoCon Tournament starts at 11:30 a.m. The 2013 SoCon Tournament is being held at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.
The first three rounds of the SoCon Tournament will be available on ESPN3 which can be seen by going to WatchESPN.com. The Georgia Southern Radio Network will have coverage of the game starting at 11:00 a.m.
The Eagles enter the postseason at 13-18 and 7-11 in the league while the Terriers are 13-18 and 7-11 in the SoCon. The winner of Friday’s game will face top-seeded Davidson on Saturday at Noon.
All-SoCon Third Team selection Eric Ferguson leads the Eagles with 13.8 points per game this year. Senior Point Guard C.J. Reed is the Eagles’ top scorer in league play, posting 14.4 ppg and 75 assists in the SoCon.
The Eagles face Wofford for the third time this season and look to snap a two-game skid against the Terriers. Georgia Southern is 1-0 against Wofford all-time in the SoCon Tournament, taking a 82-69 win over the Terriers in the 2004 SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals in North Charleston, S.C.
Wofford earned the eighth seed in the tournament, matching the Eagles’ record, but taking the tiebreaker with a pair of regular season wins. Karl Cochran, an All-SoCon Media Second Team selection ranks third in the league with 16.0 ppg. Spencer Collins earned a slot on the All-Freshman team behind 12.5 ppg, leading all league freshmen in scoring.
The winner of Friday’s game advances to face No. 1 seed Davidson in the SoCon Quarterfinals at Noon on Saturday.
