DAVIDSON, N.C. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball dropped the 2012-13 regular season finale with a 83-48 loss to Davidson at Belk Arena. The Eagles will open the 2013 SoCon Tournament on Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. against either Wofford or UNCG at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville.
“Today’s game was a tough one for us to say the least,” said Head Coach C.Y. Young. “They out-played us in every facet of the game. There is a reason they are 23-7 and 17-1 in the conference. Coming in here on senior night was always going to be a challenge, but we are in the postseason now. We’ve got to fight hard so we can get another shot at these guys in the tournament.”
The Eagles (13-18, 7-11) were unable to replicate the 70-57 win over the Wildcats on January 14th inside Hanner Fieldhouse. The Eagles did not trail in that game in Statesboro, but it was Davidson that led the entire way on Saturday afternoon.
C.J. Reed led the Eagles in scoring for the second-straight game with 16 points. He dropped the team’s only two three-point baskets, but went without an assist for just the third time this year. Tre Bussey had 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting from the field. As a team, the Eagles shot 29.8% from the field matching the mark from Wednesday night against UNCG.
Davidson’s (23-7, 17-1 SoCon) defending SoCon Player of the Year pair of De’Mon Brooks and Jake Cohen led the way for the Wildcats. Brooks had 20 points while Cohen dropped 15 points. Tyler Kalinoski came off the bench to score 12 points. JP Kuhlman who missed the game earlier this year scored 10 points.
Davidson honored its seniors before the game and took control of the game from the outset. The Eagles struggled on the rebounding glass after producing 50 total rebounds on Wednesday night against UNCG. GSU was out-rebounded 37-26 and managed just six offensive boards.
The Wildcats held a 45-19 lead at the halftime break and took the lead to 38 with 3:42 left in the game.
The SoCon Tournament is next for Georgia Southern which begins on Friday in Asheville, N.C. The Eagles open the tournament in the 11:30 a.m. game on Friday as either the No. 8 or No. 9 seed, playing either Wofford or UNCG. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS.
The league’s official bracket announcements will be made on Sunday morning upon the completion of the final regular season games on Saturday night.
