Baseball Picked Fifth, Two Named All-SoCon in Preseason Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Georgia Southern baseball team was picked fifth in both preseason polls as announced by the Southern Conference office Thursday.
The Eagles garnered 64 points in the Coaches Poll and 142 in the Media Poll after finishing the 2012 season as a SoCon Tournament Finalist. Georgia Southern posted a 33-27 overall record and went 15-15 in the conference a year ago.
Elon was named the preseason favorite by the league's 11 coaches while the media selected College of Charleston as their favorite.
The Eagles also had two student-athletes named to the Preseason All-Conference team. The reigning Freshman of the Year, Chase Griffin, and senior outfielder Scooter Williams were selected to the Second Team.
Griffin led the team with 10 home runs last season and hit .320/.404/.533 during his freshman campaign. Williams is coming off the best season of his career after hitting .290 with 56 runs scored, 12 doubles and 22 stolen bases in 60 starts a year ago.
The Cougars' senior right-hander Matt Pegler was tabbed as the league's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while Samford's Phillip Ervin was the Preseason Player of the Year.
