Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Southern Men's Soccer atoned for a 2-1 regular season loss to UNCG with a 1-0 win over the Spartans on Saturday night in the opening round of the SoCon Tournament.
Witt Carlisle earned the game-winner in the 65th minute.
"It's tournament time," said Head Coach
Kevin Kennedy. "There was a lot of pressure on the guys, but credit to them; they saw it as an opportunity tonight to go out, play loose and get a big result. Getting the win was the goal, but the clean sheet was icing on the cake. It really is a testament to how well
Neal Bates has played for us this season."
Witt Carlisle did the damage with his seventh goal of the season in the 65th minute. He converted a penalty kick for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
UNCG's offense poured forward after the goal and had a penalty shout with just less than 15 minutes left in the contest. The appeals for a spot kick, however, were denied by the referee.
Neal Bates, the defending SoCon Player of the Week, continued his stellar work with seven saves for the clean sheet. It was his fourth shutout of the season.
The win earns Georgia Southern its second-straight trip to the SoCon Semifinals. The Eagles will face Elon on Friday in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. from Furman's Stone Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
The victory is Georgia Southern's first at the UNCG Soccer Stadium against the Spartans and gives the Eagles' their second-straight semifinal date with the Elon Phoenix.
