STATESBORO, Ga. – Cinnamon Lister tallied 19 points, four assists and two steals, and Cal State Northridge outscored Georgia Southern by 15 points in the second half to post a 70-58 women's basketball victory over the Eagles Tuesday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Anna Claire Knight netted a career-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds for Georgia Southern (1-3). The junior was 10-for-20 from the floor and 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Lacie Dowling collected eight points and five rebounds, and Briana Jones corralled a team-high 11 rebounds.
Ashlee Guay contributed 16 points, four rebounds and four assists for Cal State Northridge (2-2), and Camille Mahlknecht posted 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Mikayla Thielges grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
With the Matadors trailing by three at halftime, Lister sparked a 12-2 run to open the second half as Guay and Mahlknecht each scored four. Back-to-back triples by Knight trimmed the margin to one point, but it was the last basket the Eagles would score for the next 9:26 as the Matadors pulled away with a 20-4 run.
The Eagles held the Matadors to 23.3 percent shooting in the first half, including 2-for-14 from long distance. CSUN turned the tables in the second half, holding Georgia Southern to 26.7 percent shooting and a 2-for-8 mark from 3-point range.
"We did a great job against their dribble penetration for a large part of the first half, but I think they wore us down in the second half as we got into some foul trouble," said Georgia Southern coach Chris Vozab. "Our closeouts were not as solid, and they were able to break us down off the dribble and find open shooters. We got a little frantic trying to create things that aren't in the normal flow of our offense."
Triples by Knight and Dowling ignited an 8-2 Eagle run to start the game, and the duo combined for another eight points as Georgia Southern pushed a one-point lead to 28-19 with 4:27 remaining, prompting the Matadors to call a timeout. A Guay triple out of the timeout cut the lead to six points, and the Matadors scored the final four points of the frame to get within three, 31-28, at the break.
Georgia Southern opens a four-game road trip at Jacksonville Sunday Nov. 24, at 1 p.m.
