Men’s Soccer Stumbles Against Wofford, 3-0

Eagles are beaten by more than one goal for the first time this season

Box Score STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern suffered its most painful defeat of the 2013 campaign as the Eagles fell 3-0 to Wofford on Saturday night at Eagle Field. The offense offered five shots on goal and eight corner kicks, but were unable to bulge the net. Next up for the Eagles is next Friday's GSU vs GSU match at home from 5 p.m.

"Recently it has really felt like we have things on the right path, but tonight's game was a detour from that," said Head Coach Kevin Kennedy. "We couldn't really get into a rhythm in the first half, but we were starting to put things together right before their second goal. Now we've got some more lessons to learn from as we get ready for Georgia State next Friday."

The Eagles are now 4-6-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in league play. Wofford consolidates first position in the SoCon with six points from six possible and a 2-0-0 league record. The Terriers are 6-3-1 on the season. The loss was the first home shutout for the Eagles and the first time this season that GSU had lost by more than one goal.

Wofford drew first blood, scoring with just 12 minutes gone from the clock. A long-ball ahead to Matthew Aurednik found the forward halfway through the Terrier attacking zone. He dribbled the ball forward and deked an Eagle defender before slipping the shot past the keeper to put the visitors up, 1-0.

Wofford extended their lead in the 57th minute. Aurednik converted a spot kick for his second score of the evening. Georgia Southern conceded the penalty when a handball was called in the box.

Minutes later, the Terriers upped the advantage to 3-0 as Forrest Lasso got on the end of a long Billy Padula throw in and headed the ball across from inside the six-yard box.

Georgia Southern's offense finished the night with 10 total shots and five on frame. Wofford talied 17 efforts and seven shots on goal. Fouls become a problem in the second half as four Eagles were shown yellow cards including three in the final 15 minutes of play.

Georgia Southern is back at home on Friday afternoon against Georgia State. The rivalry matchup against the Panthers starts at 5 p.m. That match can be seen live on GS All-Access on GSEagles.com
