Pitching Shines in First Scrimmage

STATESBORO, Ga. - Pitching was the name of the game in the first scrimmage of the preseason for the Georgia Southern baseball team.
Starters Sam Howard and Justin Hess both had solid outings of 2.2 innings and struck out three and two batters, respectively. Reliever Chris Myers struck out three more over 1.1 innings, while closer Kyle Rowe pitched a scoreless final frame.
“Hess and Howard both threw the ball and competed very well. There were a couple of errors behind Justin early on, but I thought he did a nice job of working out of it. Sam had good stuff today. Both guys were pounding the strike zone,” Hennon said about his two starting pitchers. “Myers was real effective, and Rowe had a nice inning of work at the end.”
The two teams ended in a 1-1 tie after five full frame. Both teams scored their lone run in the third inning.
Arthur Owens drove in Zac Lenns with a two-out double, scoring the home team's run. Lenns led off the inning with a bouncing single through the left side of the infield and reached third base after back-to-back sacrifice bunts.
“It is good to have him [Owens] back out there. He brings a lot of energy,” Hennon said.
Scooter Williams drove in Cole Watson, who doubled to lead off the frame, with a one-out grounder to second base.
The Eagles return to the field on Sunday for their second scrimmage of the preseason. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
