Baseball Heads to Midtown to Face Georgia Tech

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Baseball team steps out of Southern Conference action to complete the three-game series with #14 Georgia Tech on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Eagles remain on the road and will complete a five-game road trip at Russ Chandler Stadium. Both games are set for 6 p.m.
Georgia Southern (11-13, 3-6) is coming off a series loss to Furman and is looking to improve on their 2-8 road record. Chase Griffin's (Leesburg, Ga.) bat came alive last week with two home runs against Jacksonville on Tuesday and five hits in 12 at-bats against the Paladins. Griffin added a third home run in the series opener and drove in four runs in the series.
Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) continues to lead the squad with a .406 batting average, 9 doubles and 30 RBIs. Phillips has reached base in every game this season but went hitless in the first two games against Furman before breaking through with a single in the sixth inning on Sunday.
Georgia Tech (15-9, 4-5) is coming off a series loss to Boston College over the weekend. The Yellow Jackets are hitting .304 on the year and lead the ACC in RBIs with 167 on the year. The pitching staff holds a 4.31 ERA and ranks seventh in the league with a .249 opposing batting average. Sam Dove leads the team with a .418 batting average and eight doubles.
Justin Hess (Panama City, Fla.) (1-0, 7.45) will take the mound on Tuesday and will be countered by Josh Heddinger (1-1, 4.91) in his second start of the year. Hess picked up his first win of the season against Jacksonville a week ago after striking out six batters and allowing four earned runs in five innings of work. Josh Adams (Bath, S.C.) (0-1, 6.95) will take the mound in game two on Wednesday against Cole Pitts (2-1, 4.21).
A three-run homer from Zane Evans, his only long ball of the year, broke open an 8-8 tie in the eighth inning to put Georgia Tech on top 11-9 in the February 22nd meeting in Statesboro. Heddinger picked up his lone win of the year after pitching a scoreless seventh inning and setting down the side in order. Phillips drove in four of the Eagles' nine runs with two hits, and Scooter Williams (Detroit, Mich.) scored four runs on two hits and a walk.
