STATESBORO, Ga. - Looking to get back in the win column, the Georgia Southern Baseball team concludes a five-game road trip at #24 Wake Forest Tuesday. The Eagles will face the Demon Deacons, where legendary former GSU Head Coach Jack Stallings began his career, for the first time since 1989 in a 4 p.m. first pitch.
Georgia Southern (7-9) is looking to pick up their first win in a week after being swept by Elon in the conference opener. The Eagles are 6-5 against non-conference opponents this year but have just one win on the road, picked up last Tuesday at Charleston Southern. Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) leads the team with a .449 batting average and is looking to tie a career-high 18 game hitting streak set last year. GSU is hitting .290 as a squad and leads the Southern Conference in walks with 77 free passes.
A week after a no decision against Charleston Southern, Josh Adams (Bath, S.C.) takes the mound in a controlled start against redshirt freshman Chris Wilson. Adams worked around seven hits and two walks in four innings of work and held the Buccaneers to just one run on 73 pitches. Wilson is coming off a win against Eastern Michigan in which he allowed only one hit in five innings. He walked three batters, however, including the lead off hitter in the third inning and allowed his only two runs in that frame.
Wake Forest (14-4) opened ACC play this past weekend with a sweep of Maryland and has won 13-straight games after dropping four of their first five contests. The Demon Deacons rank fourth in the ACC with a .296 team batting average and boast the third-best fielding percentage in the league. Pat Blair, who leads off, has scored an ACC-best 27 runs this season and helped Wake Forest average 7.6 runs a game.
The two teams have met 17 times and the all-time series is a close one with Georgia Southern trailing 10-7. The series, played mainly in the 60s and 70s, has not taken place since 1989. The Eagles emerged victorious in that contest with a 6-5 win.
