STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team will set its GPS for the Sunshine State when it takes the court against Florida Atlantic and Stetson this weekend. First serve against Florida Atlantic is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. in Boca Raton. The road trip will conclude on Sunday against Stetson at noon in DeLand.
“The team is looking forward to competing this weekend against some tough Florida competition,” said Head Coach Amy Bonner. “FAU and Stetson always have solid teams, so it should be two good matches. Several members of our team are from that area, so we are looking forward to the trip.”
The Eagles (2-3) are on a two-game road winning streak which consists of wins over Presbyterian College and Mercer. Paola Garrido (Vigo, Spain) leads the team with four wins in both singles and doubles play. Her eight-match win streak was snapped when she lost last weekend to South Carolina State in a third-set match tiebreaker. Caitlin Kitchen (Kennesaw, Ga.) sports a 3-1 record in doubles and 2-1 in singles, while Cameron Williams (Norcross, Ga.) is 3-2 in singles and 2-3 in doubles. Alexis Prickett (Charleston, S.C.) has two doubles victories and one singles win, but she has been victimized by three three-set losses.
The Florida Atlantic Owls are 5-1 on the season and are currently riding a five-game winning streak with wins over Jacksonville, Savannah State, Bethune Cookman, Florida Gulf Coast, and Oakland. The Eagles look to build off their win over the Owls in 2010, which is the only career meeting between the teams.
The Stetson Hatters are 2-1 on the season. The Hatters and Eagles both lost to South Carolina State last week to snap their modest two-game winning streaks. The Eagles will look to make a dent in their all-time record against the Hatters, as the Hatters hold the lead 16-4.
