Men’s Basketball Hosts Elon in SoCon Opener

STATESBORO, GA. – For the second-straight season, Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball opens the 2012-13 SoCon Season at home. This year GSU will host Elon in the season’s first league game on Wednesday night inside Hanner Fieldhouse. The contest starts at 7 p.m.
The first 50 students through the door with a valid student ID will receive a free ticket for Saturday’s football game compliments of Retrievers Sports Bar and Grill in Statesboro. The student gate opens at 6 p.m. and the first 50 students will also receive a $5 gift voucher for wings at Retrievers.
Fans can also get their picture taken with Gus in his Santa Claus costume in the lobby of Hanner Fieldhouse beginning at 6 p.m.
The Eagles enter league play after a strong showing at Maryland on Saturday night. C.J. Reed led all scorers with 15 points while the Eagles converted 17 Terrapin turnovers into 23 points. GSU trailed by just three points at the halftime break and led by eight points in the early minutes of the contest.
Wednesday’s game can be heard live on the Georgia Southern Radio Network with Chris Blair and Frank Kerns calling all the action. Free video streaming of the game is available on GSEagles.com, the official website of Georgia Southern Athletics.
Eric Ferguson crossed the 900 point barrier against Maryland and is averaging 14.4 points per game this season. He also has a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game through the season’s first five games. Against Elon he is averaging 15.7 points per game with a pair of 21-point performances in consecutive games against the Phoenix.
Elon enters Wednesday’s game at 4-2 on the year behind 14.8 points per game from both Jack Isenbarger and Lucas Troutman. The Phoenix are one week removed from a 65-53 victory over South Carolina. GSU defeated Elon last season 69-63 on the road with a double-double from Ferguson.
The Eagles have won 11 of their last 12 games at Hanner Fieldhouse, including eight SoCon games last year.
League play continues on Saturday afternoon with the Eagles visiting Samford for GSU’s final SoCon game in 2012. The game starts at 1 p.m. (ET) from Birmingham’s Pete Hanna Center.
