Saturday's Game One with Charleston Gets Away After a Four-Run Fifth

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Baseball team (34-24) was unable to recover from a four-run fifth inning, falling to the College of Charleston (39-21) 9-1 in the first game of the day. Charleston tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning to put the contest out of reach. The loss for Georgia Southern forces a second game between the two teams with a 5 p.m. start from Joseph P. Riley, Jr., Park. Game two begins at 5 p.m. Josh Adams (Bath, S.C.) will start for the Eagles, while Charleston will go with Casey Lucchese.
Jake Zokan was stellar in his start for the College of Charleston in game one, setting a career high for innings pitched with eight and tying a career mark with seven strikeouts. Zokan (W, 4-2) faced just three over the minimum through the seven innings and tallied five 1-2-3 innings.
Game one opened with four and half innings of scoreless ball before the first run of the game crossed the plate for Charleston on a sacrifice bunt. The Cougars batted around in the fifth inning to score four more runs, all coming on five singles and a bases-loaded walk.
The two teams traded runs in the eighth inning. A pair of doubles by Ben Morgan (Evans, Ga.) and Scooter Williams (Detroit, Mich.) drove in Georgia Southern's lone run of the ball game before a Rob Kral solo shot in the bottom half of the inning gave the run back to Charleston.
Matt Murray (Spring City, Pa.) made just his second start of the season for the Eagles and worked out of jams in the first and third innings to throw four scoreless innings. Murray (L, 4-3) left after five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
