STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern Softball puts its five-game winning streak on the line this weekend as it travels to College of Charleston. The three-game Southern Conference matchup begins on Saturday (March 26th) afternoon at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader at the Patriots Point Complex. The series concludes on Sunday (March 27th) at 1 p.m.
In midweek action, the Eagles ran rough shod over North Florida to improve their record to 15-17 on the season. The GSU pitching staff tossed a pair of gems on Wednesday (March 23rd). Freshman Allie Miles (Dacula, Ga.) logged nine strikeouts in a complete game two-hitter. She carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Eagles won 5-0. In game two, birthday girl Sarah Purvis (Warner Robins, Ga.) pitched five strong innings while senior Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) worked the final two frames of a one-hit, 5-0 Georgia Southern victory.
Georgia Southern is in second place in the SoCon with a 5-1 record in conference games. Chattanooga leads the conference with a 3-0 league record. The Eagles are 35-22 all-time against the Cougars.
The Eagles are led by Marie Fogle (Rincon, Ga.) who earned her second SoCon Player of the Week accolade last week for a stellar performance in the three-game sweep over Western Carolina. Fogle is hitting .402 on the season with 11 home runs including five in the last five games. The Eagle leadoff hitter is hitting .540 to leadoff an inning and leads the team with six two-out RBIs.
Junior Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) has responded from a tough sophomore season to rank second on the Eagles' team with a .342 batting average. She has raised her average nearly 150 points since last season and has drove in 11 runs this season. Senior Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) has six home runs and 18 RBI to rank second on the team in those categories.
College of Charleston enters this weekend's play at 18-10 overall and 2-4 in league play after losing two games last weekend to UNC Greensboro. Defending SoCon Pitcher of the Week Alexa Datko paces the Cougar staff with an 8-3 record and a 1.49 ERA in 14 appearances and 75.1 innings of work. Jen Rosene has a 1.10 ERA in 38.1 innings of work.
