Women's Tennis Visits North Carolina for SoCon Matches

STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis (4-5) team travels to North Carolina to compete in two Southern Conference matches this weekend. The Eagles will meet Davidson (4-7) in Davidson, N.C., Saturday, March 12th, at 10 a.m. at the Knobloch Tennis Center before traveling to Boone, N.C., on Sunday, March 13th, to meet Appalachian State (5-3) at the ASU Tennis Courts.
"We are looking forward to bringing forth what we've been working on the past two weeks in preparation for more Southern Conference competition," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "Davidson always has a strong team, and it's going to be a really competitive match. Last season we had a very close match with Appalachian State. We know we are in for a battle of a match and are looking to our seniors for leadership."
The Eagles played host to back-to-back matches this week, taking a 4-2 victory over FGCU Wednesday (March 9th) before falling 5-2 to Stetson on Thursday (March10th). Senior Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) has won two consecutive matches and improved her singles record to 6-2 for the season after the Florida Gulf Coast victory.
Georgia Southern picked up a win over the Wildcats in 2009, defeating the Southern Conference foe for the first time since 2000 with a 5-2 victory at Hanner Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats are coming off a three-week break after their last match against Virginia Tech on February 20th. The No. 72-nationally ranked Hokies blanked the Wildcats 7-0. Davidson has posted its four wins over North Carolina AT&T, Radford, UNC Asheville and USC Upstate this season.
Bonner has led GSU to a 5-1 record over the Mountaineers in the past six seasons. Georgia Southern edged Appalachian State, 4-3, last season and posted a 7-0 shutout in 2009. The Eagles' only loss under Bonner's tenure was in 2006.
Appalachian State's home opener versus Gardner-Webb on Friday (March 11) was cancelled due to inclement weather in the High Country. The Mountaineers' three losses this season were to James Madison, Eastern Carolina and UNC Charlotte. Before playing host to the Eagles Sunday, ASU competes at Mars Hill on Saturday (March 12th) at noon.
