ATLANTA, Ga. - Freshman Elaina Lanson (Wadsworth, Ohio) competed in the 50 meter Free at the 2011 USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals on Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The Winter Nationals is a qualifying meet for the upcoming Olympic Trials.
Lanson tied for 60th place out of a field of 115 competitors, which included Olympians Dara Torres, Jessica Hardy, Kara Lynn Joyce, Christine Magnuson, Amanda Weir, and Dana Vollmer. Lanson's time in the preliminaries was 26.81. She later time trialed the event and went 27.00.
Although she fell short of qualifying, Lanson just missed finishing in the top half of a field filled with some of the world's best swimmers.
"I am extremely proud of how Elaina competed and raced against some of the best in the world," said Georgia Southern Head Swimming and Diving Coach Nate Kellogg. "This meet was a great experience for her and she will have something to draw on down the road. I think it was a real eye-opener and has really motivated her."
Lanson and her Georgia Southern teammates return to the pool on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 12 p.m. when they host Gardner-Webb and Darton in a double-dual meet at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC).
