Summer Baseball Update

STATESBORO, Ga. – Eight current Eagles are playing across the country in Summer Leagues, while two 2010 seniors began professional careers this summer.
Jake Brown, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, has made seven appearances with the Vancouver Canadians. Brown currently boasts a 1-1 record, winning his first contest he appeared in. In 8.1 innings, Brown owns a 3.24 ERA and has struck out nine batters.
Logging 8.0 innings with the AZL Brewers (Rookie Ball), Dexter Bobo has made five appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers affiliate. He has struck out 10 and carries a 3.38 ERA.
GS teammates Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and Shawn Payne (Stone Mountain, Ga.) both made their respective summer leagues’ All-Star Teams. Phillips, a rising junior, is batting .302 for the Luray Wranglers of the Valley League. He has started 34 of his 37 appearances, collecting five doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI. With an on-base percentage of .418, Phillips has scored 21 times and owns a .966 fielding percentage. Phillips helped lead the North All-Star team to a 9-2 victory over the South in the Valley League’s All-Star game (July 11).
Competing in the Sunbelt League representing the Eagles are Payne (Atlanta Crackers), Brent Pugh, Atlanta, Ga., native (Signature Park Grizzlies) and Garren Palmer, Dalton, Ga., native (Atlanta Crackers).
Matt Murray (Spring City, Pa.), a member of the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, owns a 2-1 record in 37.1 innings pitched with a 2.89 ERA. Murray earned a 5-2 win over the Falmouth Commodores in his fourth start of the summer. The Spring City, Pa., native threw six innings in the win, striking out four while surrendering only one run.
Victor Roache (Ypsilanti, Mich.) has helped lead the Delaware Cows in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League to a 19-19 record. He is batting .277 with two doubles.
Participating in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) has compiled a .273 batting average in 37 starts with the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The rising sophomore, who also was named to his league's All-Star roster, has scored 16 times and driven in 16 RBI using two doubles. Also in the NYCBL, Michael Hester (Evans, Ga.) has made eight appearances for the Allegany County Nitros. Hester has shown great consistency logging 16.0 innings, surrendering only one run and tow extra-base hits. The senior has struck out 19 batters and owns a 2-0 record with a 0.56 ERA.
Tony Chisman (Conyers, Ga.) has made 21 relief appearances for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League. Chisman is 2-2 overall with a 1.69 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched. He has struck out 27 while holding his opponents to a .242 batting average. Competing for the Sanford Mainers, Colin Snow (Alpharetta, Ga.) has tallied a 4-1 record in 33.0 innings logged. He has fanned 35 batters to post a 2.46 ERA.
