Eagles Fall to Mountaineers in SoCon Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A.J. Wirnsberger moved to seventh on the Georgia Southern all-time career home runs list, launching a solo shot in the seventh inning as the Eagles fell 6-2 to Appalachian State in the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament. Matt Andress threw a complete game with the Mountaineers improving to 36-17-1 on the season. GS finished the season 34-24.
Andress allowed two runs on nine hits, while striking out 11, to pick up the win. Dexter Bobo (Cumming, Ga.), earning his first start as an Eagle, threw 5. 2 innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on only three hits while recording a career-high seven strikeouts. Colin Snow (Alpharetta, Ga.) closed the game, logging the final 2.1 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits.
Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Victor Roache (Ypsilanti, Mich.) both went 2-for-4 with Wirnsberger scoring once and picking up one RBI on the solo home run. Shawn Payne (Stone Mountain, Ga.) drove in the first GS run and finished 1-for-5.
Chris Alessandria led the offense for ASU going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Mountaineers scattered seven hits amongst five batters.
Both teams put runners in scoring position within the first two innings, but it would be Alessandria that put Appalachian State on the board in the bottom of the second. The senior hit a two run home run to left center scoring both runners unearned as Jack Myers reached on a fielding error in the at bat prior with two outs.
Payne pushed the first Eagle run across the plate with a RBI single in the fifth. Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) opened the inning beating out a grounder to shortstop for an infield base hit and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Roman Grimaldi (Duluth, Ga.). Payne then took a 1-2 pitch to right center for the RBI.
The Mountaineers posed a threat in the sixth with consecutive walks before Bobo forced a double play groundout from David Towarnicky. Snow entered in relief and Jeremy Dowdy drove the first pitch to center plating Wes Hobson from third as ASU scored for the first time since the second inning and took a 3-1 lead.
Wirnsberger crushed his 10th home run of the season, 47th of his career, to deep center to start the seventh inning. Mountaineer starter Andress worked out of a jam with runners on second and third forcing a groundout to end the inning with ASU leading 3-2.
But ASU cushioned its lead using a three-run seventh inning. Alessandria doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a fielding error and scored on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt by Hector Crespo. Jerod Faggart picked up two RBI on a 3-1 count with a double down the left field line for a 6-2 Mountaineer lead. The inning came to a close when Towarnicky singled up the middle, but Faggart was thrown out at home for the final out.
Georgia Southern will now await an at-large bid to an NCAA Regional, which will be announced Monday, May 31 at 12:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.
