Baseball Closes Out Regular Season Welcoming The Citadel

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern baseball team concludes the regular season portion of the 2010 schedule welcoming top-ranked The Citadel to J.I. Clements Stadium May 20-22. Both teams will be in the hunt for the Southern Conference regular season crown in the final key conference series of the season.
Georgia Southern enters the series on a 12-game win streak with a record of 34-19 overall and 19-8 in league play. The Citadel brings a 35-20 mark into the series with a 21-6 ledger against conference opponents and currently holds first in league standings.

Broadcast Information
Every Georgia Southern baseball game will be carried live on the Georgia Southern Radio Network. In his fourth year, Ryan Chambers will call the play-by-play throughout the season. The broadcast begins 30 minutes prior to the scheduled first pitch on WPMX 102.9 FM. All of the Eagles' baseball action (audio and video streaming) can be heard and seen live and later archived on the internet through www.GeorgiaSouthernEagles.com.
The Series
Georgia Southern and The Citadel will meet for the 67th time in program history Thursday evening. GS narrowly leads the all-time series, 35-31.
Georgia Southern dropped two of three contests at The Citadel last season, taking game two by a decision of 3-1. The Eagles dropped games one and three by margins of 2-6 and 4-8. GS took 2-of-3 from the Bulldogs in 2008 regular season action.
Scouting the Opponent
The Citadel enters the weekend series on a five-game win streak, most recently edging Winthrop. Prior the Bulldogs swept UNC Greensboro and defeated USC Upstate.
The top two teams in the Southern Conference, The Citadel and College of Charleston, have met four times - three in conference play - this season with the Cougars taking 3-of-4 outings.
The Bulldogs are led by Nick Orvin with a .345 batting average in 54 games. Orvin leads the team in walks (37) and has three triples on the season. With 11 home runs, Bryan Altman leads the team in that category and boasts a .330 batting average. Altman also leads the team in RBI with 56.
Last Time Out
The Eagles collected a season-high 25 hits en route to a 19-4 victory over Jacksonville Tuesday (May 18). Every GS starter recorded at least one hit with A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) leading the team with four hits apiece. Only one home run was recorded in the contest, a three-run shot from Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) in the seventh.
Georgia Southern was held scoreless in only two innings of the game and posted at least one hit in each inning for the 25 total.
Promotions
Verizon Wireless will be the title sponsor of all three games during The Citadel series. Any spectator who presents their Verizon Wireless cell phone at the ticket booth at J.I. Clements Stadium will receive $1 admission into the contest. The promotion will run for all three games.
All fans can also participate in a raffle to win an IPOD Touch or a $50 gift card to the Sir Shop at all three games. A sign-up form will be available on the concourse of J.I. Clements Stadium during each game for fans to fill out who wish to participate in the raffle. The winners will be announced during each game and the winners must be present to accept the prize.
