SoCon Foe Western Carolina Visits J.I. Clements Stadium

STATESBORO, Ga. – After a two-game set on the road, the Georgia Southern baseball team returns to the confines of J.I. Clements Stadium playing host to Western Carolina this weekend. The three-game series begins Friday night (April 23) at 7 p.m. with first pitches of 2:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
With both teams entering the series having dropped their past two, Georgia Southern stands at 21-17 overall and 12-6 against league opponents, while Western Carolina carries a 23-12-1 and 6-8-1 record. Georgia Southern is coming off two losses at No. 3 Georgia Tech, whereas the Catamounts dropped the past two against Elon and Tennessee.

The Series
Georgia Southern and Western Carolina will meet for the 90th time in program history Friday night. GS leads the all-time series 49-40 after taking 2-of-3 from the Catamounts in 2009 at Hennon Stadium. The series was won by decisions of 9-2, 2-5 and 10-5. Southern Conference meetings date back to 1992 with the overall series dating back to 1970. GS dropped the series in 2007 before sweeping the Catamounts in 2008.
Scouting the Opponent
WCU has dropped four of its past six contests with a 5-2 loss at Wofford (Apr. 11) snapping a five-game win streak. The Catamounts have claimed two conference series this season against College of Charleston (2-3) and Wofford (2-3), while dropping two at The Citadel (0-3) and Elon (2-3).
The 2010 squad returned 17 letterwinners including five starters and only one starting pitcher in Kyle Stewart. After losing 11 letterwinners from 2009, WCU added 14 newcomers to the roster (10 freshmen and four transfers).
WCU opened the 2010 campaign winning eight of its first nine games including a five-game win streak to start the season. The team has played two extra-inning contests, winning both.
Last Time Out
Two losses at No. 3 Georgia Tech snapped the longest streak of the season in six-games. The Eagles entered the GT series having swept Samford for the first recorded sweep over the Bulldogs this season. GS took the series over the Bulldogs with decisions of 5-2, 14-9 and 12-9.
Promotions
This weekend's baseball series has been designated Military Appreciation Weekend with all military personnel receiving $1 admission. Presentation of a proper military I.D. must be shown at the ticket office.
