Scouting the Cougars
CofC enters the series after defeating Charleston Southern 9-4 Tuesday night. The win snapped a two-game losing streak having dropped 2-of-3 at Western Carolina in its third conference series of the season. Entering the WCU series, Charleston was riding a seven-game win streak.
CofC welcomed back the SoCon Preseason 'Player of the Year' Joey Bergman on March 26 at Western Carolina for his first start since Feb. 28 vs. UNC Asheville. Bergman underwent surgery on his right hand which caused him to miss 15 games. The senior shortstop pinch ran on March 7 and pinch hit on March 24 at Charleston Southern, but did not start.
The senior earned numerous preseason awards, including second team Louisville Preseason All-America (Collegiate Baseball) and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America Pro-Line Preseason All-America.
Charleston had three players named Preseason All-Conference in Bergman and Ryan Daniels to first team and outfielder Cole Rakar to second team. The Cougars were picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches poll and third in the preseason media poll.
Last Time Out
Georgia Southern avenged an earlier season loss to North Florida with a 3-2 win on Tuesday night in Statesboro. Justin Hess (Panama City, Fla.) took a no-hitter into the ninth inning with the Eagles leading 2-0. Consecutive singles followed by a double to right field tied the game at 2-2. GS won the game in the bottom half of the frame on a fielder's choice by Shawn Payne (Stone Mountain, Ga.). The win pushed GS to 15-11 on the season.
Next Up
Georgia Southern continues this six-game road stint with a three-game series at Elon, April 9-11. The Eagles then return home on Tuesday, April 13 to welcome Jacksonville in a 6 p.m. matchup which begins a four-game homestand.
