Brown Sends Eagles Past Thundering Herd, 9-1

STATESBORO, GA - Jake Brown pitched Georgia Southern's first complete of the season – and second of his career - as the Eagles defeated Marshall 9-1 on Friday night (March 5) at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Brown allowed one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead Georgia Southern (4-6), which seized control of the game with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Eagles collected eight hits and drew nine walks against four Thundering Herd pitchers.
Brown (1-2), a native of Forest Hill, Md., sat Marshall down in order six times. He had just one three-ball count in the first six innings, and retired 13 straight batters beginning with the third inning. The senior threw his first collegiate complete game last season in game two against Furman, which was the first 9-inning complete game by an Eagle since 2007.
A crowd of 1,543 fans watched as the Thundering Herd (4-4) grabbed the early lead on Rhett Stafford's RBI triple in the top of the second.
Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) and Owens had back-to-back RBI singles as Georgia Southern went ahead to stay with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles added another run on a Kevin Bowles (Statesboro, Ga.) sacrifice fly in the third.
Leading 3-1, Georgia Southern sent 12 batters to the plate and chased Marshall starter Ian Kadish in the fourth. During the inning, the Eagles used hits from Owens, Kyle Blackburn (Marietta, Ga.) and Wirnsberger, four walks, one hit batter and one error to post six runs against Kadish and two Thundering Herd relievers.
Blackburn had an RBI single, Wirnsberger had a two-run single, and Steve Cochrane (Mooresville, N.C.) and Roman Grimaldi (Duluth, Ga.) drew bases-loaded walks as Georgia Southern increased its cushion to 9-1 with the six run inning that marked the last offensive output by either team.
That was more than enough support for Brown, who retired 21 of the last 24 batters he faced and picked up his first win of the season with the victory.
Kadish (0-2) was charged with the loss. He worked 3.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The three-game series will continue on Saturday (March 6) at 2:30 p.m.
