Mountaineers Visit J.I. Clements Stadium to Open Conference Play

STATESBORO, GA - Georgia Southern kicks off Southern Conference play welcoming rival Appalachian State to J.I. Clements Stadium for a three game series this weekend. First pitch against the Mountaineers on Friday, March 12 is scheduled for 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest has been moved up to a 2 p.m. start time to accommodate the CSS regional television broadcast. The series concludes on Sunday, March 14 with the first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
Georgia Southern (6-7) enters the series winning three of its last four games, the most recent win coming Wednesday (March 10) at Charleston Southern. The Eagles' 8-6 win was propelled by Kyle Blackburn's (Marietta, Ga.) two-run home run in the fifth which gave Georgia Southern a 5-1 lead, and an eighth inning RBI by A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) that made the score 8-5. Colin Snow (Alpharetta, Ga.) preserved the lead for the Eagles by coming in the ninth to get his first collegiate career save.
Appalachian State enters the series with an undefeated 10-0 record, the best start in its school history. The Mountaineers opened the season with wins over Presbyterian and USC Upstate in the Marriot Classic and has kept the streak alive with wins against Gardner-Webb, Niagara, Marist, and Rider.
Scheduled to take the mound Friday for the Eagles will be left handed pitcher Jake Brown (Forest Hill, Md.). Brown pitched a complete game his last outing against Marshall, surrendering one earned run on just four hits with seven strikeouts. Right handed pitcher Matt Andress is scheduled to start for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers' ace gave up two runs on eight hits in six innings of work his last outing to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Saturday's projected starters are right handed pitcher Matt Murray (Spring City, Pa.) and left handed pitcher Tyler Jackson. Both pitchers recorded their first wins of the season last weekend. Murray worked 6.1 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits while Jackson gave Appalachian State five innings of work with two earned runs on eight hits.
Concluding the series on Sunday will be Trent Franzago (Byron, Ga.) for the Eagles, and Ryan Arrowood for the Mountaineers. Despite allowing only one earned run last weekend, Franzago took the loss working four innings that amounted into four runs (one earned) on eight hits. Arrowood recorded his third win of the season with his last outing despite giving up four earned runs on ten hits in five innings off the mound.
Last year Georgia Southern took two out of three games from the Mountaineers in Boone, N.C. Andress was charged with the loss in game one as the righty gave up five earned runs to the Eagles off of eleven hits. Georgia Southern staged a late rally to take game two, 10-7, after being down seven runs after three innings. The Mountaineers avoided the sweep with a 3-1 win in the last game of the series.
Chick-fil-A will be on hand for Friday night's game giving away free Chick-fil-A sandwiches to the first 50 fans and free Chick-fil-A coupons to the next 500 fans. For Junior Eagle Club Day on Sunday, all Junior Eagle Club members will receive free entry into the contest when they present their membership card.
