Eagles Picked to Finish First by SEBaseball.com

ATLANTA, GA – Projected to finish first in the Southern Conference according to SEBaseball.com, Georgia Southern had four players recognized on the all-conference team released today by the site, which specializes in collegiate baseball in the Southeast. Senior A.J. Wirnsberger was named first team and was joined by three others on the second team.
Georgia Southern finished second to Elon in regular season competition in 2009, but captured the Southern Conference Tournament title eliminating Elon, 7-2. Senior infielder Wirnsberger was named first-team on the 2010 SEBaseball.com predictions, while infielders Kyle Blackburn and Eric Phillips and pitcher Matt Murray earned second-team honors.
A senior from Tuscaloosa, Ala., Wirnsberger hit .323 appearing in 55 games for the 2009 campaign. A Preseason First Team All-SoCon and Preseason Third Team All-America, he belted 13 homeruns for second-best on the team and drove in 58 runs. Wirnsberger scored 44 times and is batting .313 in his three-year career with 38 homers and 170 runs batted in.
Blackburn, a senior who hails from Marietta, Ga., was selected as the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player and earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Blackburn launched a three-run homer over right field, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the title game against Elon. The third homerun of the week for the Eagle, Blackburn closed the season batting .333 with 12 homers. The senior appeared in 36 games in 2009, knocking in 28 runs.
Returning as a sophomore, Phillips appeared in 51 games - starting 48 – in his inaugural season as an Eagle. He batted .333 on the year with 43 runs scored. The Carollton, Ga., native achieved success in 75 percent of stolen bases attempted and was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team. He was also named Second Team Freshman All-America by Ping!Baseball leading the team in hitting against league opponents with a .413 average.
One of three returning starting pitchers in 2010, Murray was 6-3 with a 4.76 ERA in 2009. He hurled 73.2 innings and struck out 60. The Spring City, Pa., native struck out a season-high 11 against Furman and was selected to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.
