Georgia Southern Hosts Holy Cross for Alumni Weekend

STATESBORO, GA – Georgia Southern will look to get back to winning ways welcoming a fresh Holy Cross team for a three-game series on Alumni Weekend (Feb. 27-March 1). The two teams will meet for the first time in program history on Saturday, Feb. 27 with a first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at J.I. Clements Stadium.
The series continues on Sunday, Feb. 28 with a first pitch also of 1:30 p.m. and concludes on Monday, March 1 at 6:00 p.m.
Georgia Southern (1-4) recently opened midweek play dropping two contests to No. 3 Georgia Tech in Statesboro by decisions of 10-0 and 8-5. Senior A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) homered for the third time in five games, knotting the score at 2-all in game two of the series. Kyle Blackburn (Marietta, Ga.) hit .333 in the series with a double as one of his three hits recorded. Arthur Owens (Fayetteville, Ga.) closed the deficit to one run in game two, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth using a two-out single to score Eric Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.) who reached on a fielder's choice.
Holy Cross opens its 2010 campaign this weekend looking for its third-consecutive Patriot League Tournament appearance. The Crusaders return eight pitchers and 10 position players from a team that ended 2009 with a 22-27 record and finished third in the Patriot League.
The Crusaders were picked to finish third in their respective conference preseason poll. Head coach Greg DiCenzo added 13 newcomers to a roster rich of returning veterans.
Scheduled to take the mound Saturday afternoon is sophomore right hander Matt Murray (Spring City, Pa.). Murray made his first start in game two of the season-opening Tennessee Tech series and threw 3.2 innings. Sophomore Trent Franzago (Byron, Ga.) and freshman Chris Beck (Jefferson, Ga.) are scheduled to throw Sunday and Monday, respectively.
The Crusaders plan to start seniors Matt Shapiro on Saturday and Bobby Holmes on Sunday. Sophomore Nate Koneski is scheduled to take the mound for the final game. The 2008 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, Shapiro made 10 starts in 2009, tallying a 3-4 overall mark. Holmes went 3-7 in 11 starts last season, earning his second-consecutive Patriot League All-Tournament team honor. As a freshman, Koneski took the mound 15 times, starting six, and finished his freshman year with a 2-2 mark.
