STATESBORO, GA ? Closing out the 2009 regular season, the Georgia Southern men's tennis team hits the road for its two final matches of the campaign this weekend. The Eagles conclude Southern Conference play on Saturday at Chattanooga in a noon match and play their last regular season match on Sunday at Presbyterian at 1 p.m.
Coming off a 4-3 loss at UNC Greensboro (April 11), the Eagles head into weekend competition with an 8-8-1 overall mark and 4-4-1 conference ledger. The doubles point lifted the Spartans past the Eagles as both teams split three singles matches apiece. The lower half of the singles lineup was victorious for Georgia Southern as Alain Garrido, Justin Flynn and Edio Castanhel notched wins over their opponents. The senior duo of Joris De Weerdt and Matthew Sands recorded the lone doubles win for the Eagles at the top position to improve to 19-9 overall this season, 10-6 in dual match play and 6-2 against conference opponents.
Facing Georgia Southern on its senior day, Chattanooga will look for its first conference win of the season standing at 0-9 in the SoCon and 2-16 overall. The Mocs' wins come from a 6-1 victory over UT-Martin (February 14) and most recently a 6-1 triumph over Tennessee Wesleyan (April 14).
Non-conference foe Presbyterian hosts the Eagles in their final match of the regular season on Sunday, April 19. The Blue Hose are coming off a 5-2 loss at Liberty, April 13. Presbyterian picked up singles victories at the No.1 and No. 5 seeds by means of Matthew Martin and Andrew Lee, respectively. With the loss, the Blue Hose dropped to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in Big South Conference play.
Recapping the 2008 match-ups between the schools, Georgia Southern swept Presbyterian, 7-0, before falling to Chattanooga 4-3 at the Hanner Tennis Complex. The last recorded win by the Eagles over the Mocs dates back to the 2005 season when Georgia Southern was victorious by a 4-3 decision in Chattanooga.
