Eagles collect second straight home win, travel to USF on Sunday for a matchup with the Bulls
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern men's tennis notched its second straight home win on Friday, defeating South Carolina State by a 4-2 tally at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles improved to 3-1 on the young season with the victory, while South Carolina State falls to 0-2. Georgia Southern returns to action on Sunday, traveling to USF for a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Bulls in Tampa.
South Carolina State would take the early 1-0 lead on the Eagles by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles would respond in singles play by taking four of six first sets. Albert Widell would even the score for Georgia Southern with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, but South Carolina State would pick up a straight set win at No. 1 singles.
Edoardo Santoni and Albert Saar would put the Eagles in front with straight-set singles wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles, respectively, bringing the match down to a pair of three-setters. Willy Mirarchi would prevail over Bastian Zamora, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, to clinch the victory for Georgia Southern.
"It's the first time that this group has been put in that situation," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said about going into singles play down a point. "I was really proud of how they responded. I'm hoping that they continue to see that our tennis doesn't necessarily have to be great, but we have to be ready to go through whatever's necessary to win matches. It's how we respond and we responded pretty well today."
