Softball Splits SoCon Opening Doubleheader

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Georgia Southern softball team (8-11, 1-1) split the Southern Conference opening doubleheader against College of Charleston Saturday afternoon.

Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) picked up a pair of hits in both games of the doubleheader. Smith went four for seven with her first career SoCon homer.

Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) had a stellar day pitching nine-plus innings allowing no runs and only three hits in the doubleheader.

Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) continues to be dangerous going three for five with three RBIs and three walks in Saturday's doubleheader.

Game One

Georgia Southern held on to defeat the College of Charleston 1-0 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Streetmon continues to dominate, pitching a two-hitter in her first career conference start.

Siliga walked three times in the first game, including her fifth intentional walk of the season.

The Eagles struck first on Smith's solo shot to left in the second inning. Smith went two for three and provided the Eagles their lone run of the day.

Georgia Southern threatened to blow the game open with a bases-loaded opportunity in the fifth. Amanda Glover (Evans, Ga.) led off the inning with a pitch-hit single. Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.) advanced the runner with a bunt base hit. Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Siliga was intentionally walked, loading the bases; but Terri Mesko got Amanda Hall (Haddock, Ga.) to fly out to center to end the inning.

The Cougars threatened to force extra innings when they got a runner to third with one out in the seventh. Howard led off the inning with a base knock to left. She reached third after a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch, but Streetmon struck out Katie Nutaitis for the second out of the inning and got Katie Pesature to ground out to end the game.

Game Two

Georgia Southern took an early 1-0 lead but could not hold on after the College of Charleston scored four runs in back-to-back innings and won game two 9-6. The Eagles made a game of it scoring four late runs, but the comeback attempt fell short.

Streetmon pitched two-plus innings of scoreless relief after pitching a complete game in game one.

The Eagles scored first in the top half of the first on a RBI fielder's choice by Hall, scoring Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) from second.

The Cougars got on the board with four in the bottom half of the inning on Katie Nutaitis' grand slam. They added four more runs in the second on three hits, including Kristie Shifflett's three RBI homer down the third base line.

Georgia Southern manufactured another run after Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) reached second on an error and scored on a grounder to short.

The Eagles made a late comeback attempt, scoring four runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined. Back-to-back doubles by Siliga and Hall with one out in the fifth scored the first run of the fifth inning. Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) added the second run of the inning when she drove in Siliga with a RBI base knock.

Siliga drove in the fifth run of the game in the sixth inning with a two-out RBI double, scoring Iduate from first base. Hall kept the rally going with her second extra base hit in as many innings with a RBI triple to center.

Softball continues the conference opening series with the Cougars Sunday at 1 p.m.
