Softball Splits Doubleheader with Jacksonville Tuesday

Georgia Southern got solid pitching in both games one and two. The Eagles allowed two earned runs on 10 ten hits in 16 total innings pitched Tuesday.
Game One
Georgia Southern defeated the Dolphins 2-1 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Fogle drove in both runs of the game with her first career hit and home run in the fifth inning. Williams set up the two-run fifth inning with a two-out single to left.
“She has been working hard and hitting extra in the cages,” said head coach Maggie Johnson. “It is going to pay off for her. She has been fighting to get into the lineup, and she hit the ball hard today.”
Brianna Streetmon (Winder, Ga.) pitched a stellar game going the distance while allowing no earned runs on only two hits.
“Brianna has been solid,” said Johnson. “We are getting to the point where we know what we are going to get from her.”
Jacksonville took an early lead in the second inning after Brie Carmack was granted home plate after an illegal pitch was charged to Streetmon. Carmack reached base with no outs and advanced to third on two straight ground outs before scoring the first run of the game.
Georgia Southern threatened in the fourth inning when Hanna Ennis (Snellville, Ga.) doubled to center with one out and the middle of the order coming to bat, but she was left stranded after two straight outs were recorded.
Game Two
The Eagles forced extra innings in game two but lost 4-3 after Nina Iduate (Norcross, Ga.) was called out at first base to end the ninth inning.
“We needed to execute earlier in the game,” said Johnson. “We had opportunities with runners on base, but we couldn't move them.”
Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) fouled off five straight pitches during her seventh inning at-bat before driving in Iduate to tie the game with a RBI double to center, forcing extra innings.
“She didn't have one of her best days at the plate, but when it came down to it she battled and put the ball in play hard,” said Johnson. “It wasn't the best swing of the day, but it was the one that got the job done. She is a gamer and steps up in situations like that. She loves it.”
Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) pitched a solid game going all nine innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in her first start of the season. Smith also picked up two hits including a double in the sixth inning.
Jacksonville took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on back-to-back one-out hits. Katie Kelly drove in Melissa Morales with a RBI single to center. The Dolphins threatened to blow the game open with runners on second and third, but Smith threw Katarina Engler out at home and coaxed a fly out to end the inning.
Amanda Glover (Evans, Ga.) tied the game with her second homer of the season -- a solo shot to left in the fourth inning.
Simone Bruemmer gave the Dolphins a late 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when she drove in Carmack with a pitch-hit single.
The two teams scored a run in the eighth inning after Siliga sent the game to extra innings with her RBI double. Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) drove in the Eagles' run with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Siliga.
Jacksonville scored the winning run in the top of the ninth on Kayla Shavers' RBI single to right.
Georgia Southern threatened in the bottom half of the ninth. Amanda Glover moved Jenny Side (Loganville, Ga.) to third with a sacrifice bunt. Fogle appeared to have picked up a single but was robbed by the shortstop Kelly on a diving grab for the second out of the inning. Iduate was called out on a ground ball to shortstop to end the game.
Softball travels to Jacksonville, Fla. Thursday to face the North Florida Ospreys in a doubleheader set for 4 p.m. at the UNF Softball Complex.
