Men's Basketball Releases 2008-09 Schedule

STATESBORO, Ga. --- A trip to Florida and a home BracketBusters matchup highlight the 2008-09 Georgia Southern men's basketball schedule released this week.
The slate includes 10 non-conference games, 20 Southern Conference tilts and potentially seven games against schools who reached postseason play a season ago, including Duke, Drake, Austin Peay and Florida.
“This is probably one of the most challenging schedules we've had in the last 10 years in regards to non-conference opponents,” said head coach Jeff Price. “We're playing at Florida, at UTEP, in Cameron Indoor, at Drake's tournament, who was an NCAA Tournament team, not to mention we play Davidson twice who was an Elite Eight team. So with the addition of what they've done in the league, the schedule is as good as it's been in the last 10 years.”
The addition of Samford to the conference brings an end to a home-and-home series against every league team. The Eagles will face Appalachian State and Western Carolina just once during the season.
The season begins Nov. 10-11 with the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Durham, N.C. GSU will open with Houston followed by either Duke or Presbyterian.
Georgia Southern fans will see their team in action for the first time Nov. 14 against Reinhardt College. A trip to UTEP on Nov. 18 precedes home games against Austin Peay State in a rematch of last year's BracketBusters matchup and the SoCon opener against new member Samford.
“They're bringing a different style,” said Price of the new league school. “Samford plays a Princeton-style offense. They're going to have some success in the league their first year because I don't think any of us have experience playing against a team like that. Just the unknown that they bring will allow them to have some success.”
The 2008 calendar year wraps up with a tournament at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa and a game at Florida in Gainesville. Last year the Gators edged the Eagles 52-49 in Jacksonville.
“Everybody knows to go play Florida in Gainesville is an extremely tough game,” said Price. “But we played Florida really well last year and it was a great experience for our guys. We're excited to play them again.”
Georgia Southern starts the new year Jan. 3 at home against Chattanooga then goes on the road for three straight at The Citadel (Jan. 8), Charleston (Jan. 10) and UNC Greensboro (Jan. 15). GSU plays three of their next four at home with Davidson (Jan. 17), Wofford (Jan. 22) and Furman (Jan. 24) coming to Hanner Fieldhouse interrupted by a trip to Western Carolina (Jan. 19).
January concludes with a road swing to Samford (Jan. 29) and Chattanooga (Jan. 31) while February opens with a three-game homestand vs. Appalachian State (Feb. 2), Elon (Feb. 5) and UNC Greensboro (Feb. 7).
The Eagles venture to Furman (Feb. 12) and Wofford (Feb. 14) and host Charleston (Feb. 19) before a home BracketBusters game on Feb. 21. Matchups will be based on RPI and announced weeks ahead of the scheduled date.
“This is something we haven't had since I've been here and that's why we played in it last year so we could get a home game. So we're all really excited about having the opportunity to have a BracketBusters game at home and plus get the return game at home against Austin Peay.”
The regular season concludes with games at Elon (Feb. 26) and Davidson (Feb. 28) and the home finale will be March 2 against The Citadel.
