Shehan, Wright Named ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? Georgia Southern’s Chris Shehan (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) and Ty Wright (Montrose/West Laurens) were named to both the 2008 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Atlantic Region and the 2008 All-America teams, it was announced recently by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Shehan and Wright are two of three from the Southern Conference to be named to the All-America teams and it is the first time since 1993 that two Eagles received such an honor in the same year. Paul Thornton and Todd Greene both were name to the ABCA All-America team in 1993.
The Atlantic Region was well represented at the national level, as 10 of its 13 First-Team All-Region players also were named to one of the three ABCA All-America teams, including five on the first team.
Outfielder Chris Shehan earned First-Team All-Atlantic Region honors and then took home First-Team All-America laurels.
Outfielder Ty Wright also earned First-Team All-Atlantic Region honors and then was named to the All-America Second Team.
Chris Shehan: Capsule
On Wednesday (June 11), Shehan was named Pro-Line Athletic First Team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and he was the only Southern Conference representative on the First Team. He was recently a 30th round pick by the Atlanta Braves.
In just three years, Shehan ended his career with the third-best career batting average in program history, a .376 clip (254-676). He tied for ninth in career hits and ranked seventh scoring 182 runs. Shehan narrowly missed the career ?Top 10’ listings in: doubles (48), home runs (34), total bases (414), walks (93), RBI (160) and stolen bases (40-46).
Shehan paced the 2008 offense with record numbers. The SoCon’s ?Player of the Year’ (sports media association) batted .438 - the fourth highest single-season average. He became the fifth Eagle to be named SoCon ?Player of the Year’. He also earned SoCon ?Player of the Month’ in March, National ?Player of the Week’ (Mar. 17), and is a two-time SoCon ?Player of the Week’
Starting in all 58 games, Shehan tallied 84 runs scored (GS season record), 77 RBI (tied 9th), 17 doubles, three triples, 22 home runs (tied 8th), .557 on-base percentage, 53 walks (tied 8th), 22-of-24 stolen bases, 187 total bases (tied 6th) and six outfield assists. A Third Team Academic All-District pick, Shehan recorded a team-leading 33 multi-hit games and 23 multi-RBI games. He ended the year on career-high 15-game hitting streak and earned a spot on the SoCon All-Tournament Team.
Ty Wright: Capsule
Wright was named to the All-Southern Conference First Team at the conclusion of the season. He was named SoCon ?Player of the Month’ in April and earned NCBWA ?National Player of the Week’ and SoCon ?Player of the Week’ honors for the week of Apr. 29.
Wright started in 45 of 50 games played and was featured in Sports Illustrated ?Faces in the Crowd’ after hitting for the cycle in the first four innings of game three at Wofford. This year, he tallied 63 runs scored, 52 RBI batting mainly as leadoff hitter, and led the team with 22 doubles. He recorded 17 home runs, including a program record six that led off a game. Eight of his home runs started off an inning.
He tallied 32 walks to 25 strikeouts in 196 at-bats and just missed the .400 club, finishing the year batting at a .398 clip. He went 9-for-12 in stolen bases, had nine doubles in a six-game span, and hit one of the NCAA record 14 home runs against Columbia (Mar. 15). Wright tied for sixth among the Georgia Southern season doubles leaders and scored 16 runs in a nine-game span.
In the five games against UNC Greensboro, Wright had 10 runs scored, 10 hits and six RBI. In April, he went 17-for-38. When he hit for the cycle at Wofford, he had five hits, five RBI and three runs scored. In the opener against The Citadel, he tallied four RBI. Wright recorded a 12-game hitting streak on the year.
At the SoCon tournament, Wright went 6-for-14 with four runs scored, had two outfield assists in the tournament against UNC Greensboro and just missed on a third.
