Tae Norwood Joins Men's Basketball Staff

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern head men's basketball coach Jeff Price has announced the hiring of Tae Norwood as assistant coach.

Norwood rejoins the staff, having previously served under Price during the 2003-04 season as administrative assistant. He will be responsible for GSU's recruiting efforts and the development of guards.

“I felt like he was a great fit, mainly because he's been a part of our program in the past as a graduate assistant,” said Price. “He's familiar with the way we do things and since he has left here has developed a lot of good recruiting contacts.”

Norwood is coming off a successful one-year stint at NCAA Division II member Florida Southern College. While at the Lakeland, Fla. school, he helped guide the Moccasins to the Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament titles and a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Four different players earned conference honors under Norwood's watch, including Rob Eldridge, a first team all-conference performer, and Rion Rayfield, the SSC's freshman of the year. Brandon Jenkins was tabbed to the all-freshman team and Braxton Williams was the SSC Tournament Most Valuable Player.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native spent two years at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Huskies, as well as interim head coach in the spring of 2006.

Norwood played his college basketball at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont where he was a four-year letterman from 1996-2000. During that time, helped the Eagles go 53-4 in conference play, win three Mayflower Conference championships, and advance to the NAIA Tournament three times. He was a member of the Mayflower All-Conference Team as a junior and senior, and by the time his career was over, Norwood was Green Mountain's career leader in assists and steals.

Norwood's coaching career actually began while he was still playing at Green Mountain College. During his four years in college, he served as the boys head coach at Poultney Middle School (1997), as an assistant varsity coach at Poultney High School (1998), and as the girls' assistant varsity coach at Otter Valley Union High School (2000).

Norwood graduated with a degree in Recreation and Leisure Services from Green Mountain in 2000, and later earned his master's degree in Health and Kinesiology from Georgia Southern University in May of 2004. While completing his education at Georgia Southern he also earned his first collegiate coaching experience as an administrative assistant. He then spent the 2004-05 season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Milligan College in Tennessee before his two-year stint at Bloomsburg in the same capacity.

In addition to his coaching resumé, Norwood has extensive experience in other areas of college athletics, including game and event management, and fund raising. He also served as the intramural director at Milligan College and as assistant director for game management at Bloomsburg. Norwood has been the camp director or coordinator at several summer camps and served as a coach at the Seattle Storm and Supersonics Camp from 1999-2001.

Off the court, Norwood has been active in the Boys and Girls Clubs, and is a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, and the Black Coaches Association.
