Purpose:
The purpose of this statement is to develop and sustain our purpose and mission in the Athletic Training Department at Georgia Southern University. In accordance with the laws of the state of Georgia governing the practice of athletic trainer and the Code of Professional Practice and Standards of Practice of the National Athletic Trainers Association, the Athletic Training Department is responsible for providing quality health care for all student-athletes in the most efficient and beneficial manner possible. This will be accomplished by:

Respecting the dignity of each individual student-athlete and recognizing differences in gender, race, and cultural background.

Maintaining the confidentiality of both written and verbal information obtained from the athlete.

Being cognizant of the “total” athlete, including his/her emotional, mental, and physical needs.

?Thoroughly and competently evaluating each injured athlete in accordance with the laws of the state of Georgia governing the practice of athletic training and the Standards of Practice of the NATA, referring the athlete to the designated physician when deemed essential and necessary.

Staffing the athletic training complex during posted hours.

Accurately and regularly documenting each injured athlete’s progress and care following athletic training department policies and procedures.

Encouraging and contributing to an atmosphere of mutual cooperation, respect and support with the attending physician(s) of the athlete, the athletic coaching staff, the athletic and university administration, and other university departments.
Service:
The Athletic Training Department at Georgia Southern University is solely responsible for the delivery of health care to all student-athletes participating in Georgia Southern University intercollegiate programs. This health care includes:
- The prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses sustained during practice or competition.
- Organization and administration of Georgia Southern University’s Department of Athletics health care delivery system.
- Education and counseling of student-athletes, parents, and coaches.
