Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short as Eagles Lose Finale

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? A ninth inning rally fell short as Georgia Southern could not finish off a sweep of Davidson, losing 7-6 Sunday afternoon (April 20). The Eagles dropped to 20-18 overall and 7-8 in the Southern Conference.
Through the first six innings Georgia Southern held a 4-2 lead before the Wildcats staged a rally in the latter innings.
Davidson tied the game in the seventh off reliever Aaron Eubanks (Moultrie/Colquitt County). Brett Shore hit a leadoff single then went to third on Zach Kayne's one out single. Danny Weiss lined a sacrifice fly. After Chase FitzPatrick's double put two runners in scoring position Matt Webb hit a sharp grounder that third baseman A.J. Wirnsberger (Tuscaloosa, AL/Paul Bear Bryant) made a diving stop on down the line. His throw to first was not in time though, allowing the tying run to score but saving the go-ahead run from scoring.
In the eighth Davidson scored three times, getting a RBI from the 1-3 hitters to go ahead 7-4. GS had a chance to regain the lead in the ninth.
David Richardson (Dahlonega/Lumpkin County) hit a leadoff single up the middle off Webb (1-0). Brian Pierce (Roswell/Roswell) was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Pinch-hitter Kyle Blackburn (Marietta/Walton) walked to load the bases. During Ty Wright's (Montrose/West Laurens) at-bat Webb uncorked a wild pitch to score one. Wright was hit by a pitch to reload the bases with no one out.
Phillip Porter (Marietta/Sprayberry) reached on a fielder's choice to score another run. With runners on the corners and one out, Chris Shehan (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) hit a sharp grounder that the Wildcats turned for a 6-4-3 game-ending double play.
The Wildcats (10-24, 2-13) got off to an early lead. FitzPatrick reached on a leadoff walk in the second then Webb doubled to left. Sam Payne lined a RBI single then Tommy Piacenza hit a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. But the Eagles came right back with more two out hitting, much like they had done all weekend long.
Pierce was hit by a Brant West pitch to start the third. Kevin Bowles (Statesboro/Statesboro), making his first collegiate start, doubled to left. Wright hit a sacrifice fly for the first run. Two batters later ? with two outs ? Shehan lined a shot to right centerfield for his 13th home run of the year. Griffin Benedict (Dunwoody/St. Pius) reached when left fielder Shore had the shallow fly ball bounce out of his glove. Jeremiah Parker (Carrollton/Carrollton) continued his clutch hitting lining a RBI double to right for a 4-1 lead.
After giving up the two runs in the second, Andy Moye (Alpharetta/Alpharetta) got into a groove and shut down the Wildcats through six. Despite a career-high performance from the redshirt-freshman he received a no-decision. Moye gave up two runs on five hits in a career-best six innings pitched. He fanned a career-high six batters.
The Eagles' bullpen had allowed just one run in eight innings of work throughout the series. Eubanks allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Charlie Strohecker (Alpharetta/Milton) suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 2-1. He gave up two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Tony Chisman (Conyers/Salem) allowed one run while retiring two batters.
Shehan tallied three of the team's seven hits. Richardson had two hits and Pierce scored two times.
Webb was charged for two runs on one hit in two innings and got two hits at the plate. Shore finished the game 4-for-4.
The Eagles return home Tuesday night (April 22), facing North Florida with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
