Softball, Furman Throw Matching 3-0 Shutouts, Split Twinbill

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Georgia Southern and Furman each threw a 3-0 shutout to split a softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
The doubleheader was the Southern Conference opener for both teams. GSU is now 19-17, Furman is 11-12.
“I thought we came out ready to play today,” said GSU head coach Natalie Poole. “I don't think that we had anything significantly happen bad or good, either way. I just felt like we didn't make good adjustments at the plate ? one hit is an indication of that, especially because we are a good hitting team.”
Furman's Lana Mackey tossed a one-hit shutout in game one and Georgia Southern freshmen Megen Smith (Springfield, Ga.) answered and took a one-hitter into the seventh inning in game two.
Smith (8-5) struck out two and walked one to record her third shutout of the season.
“I thought (the performance) was pretty good,” said Poole about Smith. “It started to go a little bit downhill just a little bit there towards the end. I feel like she probably didn't pitch much better than Mel (Laliberte) did, we just didn't help Mel out and didn't give her any protection.”
Junior Robyne Siliga (Oceanside, Calif.) went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in the game's final run with a bunt single in the seventh. Sophomore Sam Russo (Snellville, Ga.) also recorded two hits.
Three consecutive singles with two outs in the second plated the first run as junior Michelle Beasley (Metter, Ga.) drove home Russo. Senior Aubrey Thweatt (Georgia, Vt.) led off the fifth with a single, went to third on a sacrifice and a single and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
Mackey (7-8) allowed just a first-inning single and permitted just two runners to reach second the rest of the game. She struck out nine and retired the final 12 batters of the game.
“It really didn't matter how many runs were scored against us because we couldn't put any up on the board,” said Poole.
Mackey helped her cause with a two-run single in the fourth to break a 0-0 deadlock. Brythe Blankenship gave the Paladins some breathing room in a seventh with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Melissa Laliberte (Cobourg, Ontario, Canada) gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings of work to fall to 8-5.
