Statesboro, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women's tennis team announced its 2007 schedule. The Eagles, led by fourth year head coach Amy Bonner, will hit the courts for a competitive schedule, opening fall competition Sept. 22-23 at the ETSU Fall Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
“I'm excited about the schedule for our upcoming season,” said Bonner. “We are playing a lot of new teams in the spring that we haven't faced in a few years. And we have all of January and February where we play some really tough non-conference opponents. This will be a key in helping us prepare for our competitive Southern Conference matches.”
In addition to the ETSU tournament, the Eagles will compete four more times during the fall with scheduled events at the Jacksonville University Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla., which begins on Oct. 5. The following weekend Georgia Southern will return to participate in the North Florida Invitational, with the first match taking place (Oct. 12).
The Eagles make a trip to Athens, Ga. (Oct. 20) for the ITA Fall Regional before finishing out fall competition Oct. 26 at the Southern Intercollegiate in Columbia, S.C.
“Our fall tournaments will be very instrumental in preparation for the spring,” said Bonner. “We start off with a tournament at ETSU where we competed last year. I'm looking forward to ETSU because last fall we were able to pick up some good wins and there are a lot of strong teams that will be there.”
Georgia Southern opens the spring schedule at home Jan. 26 against Jacksonville.
The Eagles head to Atlanta, Ga. where they will face off against Samford Feb. 2 and compete against Georgia State the following day. Georgia Southern concludes the short road trip with a match at Kennesaw State. Mercer comes to Statesboro Feb. 17 and the Eagles conclude the month of February with away matches against Gardner-Webb (Feb. 23) and USC Upstate (Feb. 24).
Georgia Southern opens the month of March with three straight home matches against Western Carolina (March 2), Tennessee Tech (March 3) and Hampton (March 5). The team travels to South Carolina (March 9-10) to compete against Furman and Wofford.
The Eagles head home for a March 15 match up with UNC Greensboro, before heading out to compete at Appalachian State. Georgia Southern finished out the month of March at home against Davidson (Mar. 29).
The team opens the month of April in North Carolina at Elon (April 5) and at Winston-Salem State (April 6). The Eagles finish out the regular season at home with matches against the College of Charleston (April 9) and Chattanooga (April 12). Postseason play begins April 17-20 at the Southern Conference Tournament.
