HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both squads started with cold bats in the first, as Alex Mason ended the opening frame with a K.
- Brady Christman delivered a one-out single in the Eagle second to keep his bat hot, his second hit of the afternoon.
- A walk and hit batter loaded the bases for Southern and Max Prozny capitalized, driving home Christman off a sac-fly. The following batter, Frank Wells looped a single through the right side to score another and end the frame with a 2-0 lead.
- After walking the leadoff batter, Alex Mason retired the next six batters he faced to send the Eagles to the third with the Bobcats still scoreless.
- The Eagles exploded for four runs in the third inning themselves. Three straight singles by James McCoy, Sean White and Bryson Trammell loaded the bags with none retired. Christman drew a walk to send one home and up the lead to three.
- With the bases still loaded, Jack Myers placed a perfect liner double down the left field line to plate two before a sac-fly from Max Prozny an inning later topped off the inning, extending the Southern lead to 6-0.
- The Bobcats cut back into the lead with just two swings of the bat; a solo homer from Park and a three-run one from Mora with two on, making it just 6-4.
- After another quiet Eagles' inning, Texas State used a leadoff double from Cotton to advance and score him off consecutive groundouts to cut their deficit to just one, scoring now five unanswered.
- A one-out double from Wells to the gap, followed by Edwards walking, put two in scoring position with just one away in the sixth after a wild pitch advanced them both. McCoy was saved by a Bobcat error in centerfield that plated one to make it 7-5. However, a double play turned after a pitching change limited the damage to just one and gave some momentum back to Texas State.
- A leadoff triple from Vossos after the stretch gave way to an RBI-groundout from Cotton to make it 7-6. Another groundout and a massive K later from Brady Pendley shut down any more antics.
- Another scoreless inning from Southern later, Texas State had Stewart reach aboard after getting plunked before Farris gave them their first lead of the game with ten-pitch at bat, including eight foul balls, that resulted in a homer and gave them the 8-7 lead.
- The Eagles, however, showed no quit as a leadoff walk followed by a McCoy double put two in scoring position with none retired.
- After a wild pitch tied things up, Sean White delivered a sharp single up the middle to score McCoy and give Southern the lead back, now 9-8.
- In the bottom of the ninth, the Bobcats led it off with a double from Vossos.Following a strikeout and groundout, a walk issued prompted a pitching change.
- With the tying run on third, Lewis only threw one pitch. It was a popout to Myers in shallow right field to end the game.
NOTES:
- Four Eagles had multi-hit games on the night, including White's first since the opening game against Marshall on March 20th.
- Frank Wells had his first multi-hit game with his double and RBI-single early in the contest.
- Jax Lewis got his first save of the season, only throwing one pitch to give his Eagles the win.
- Jack Myers reached on all five at bats on the night, going 2-2 with three walks.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles skip a midweek and return back to J.I. to take on South Alabama for a weekend series starting Friday, April 10th. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM against the Jaguars.
