Eagles Come Up Just Short to Jaguars, Fall 12-13

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Despite giving up a leadoff single, Alex Mason forced a 6-4-3 double play just four pitches later to send the Jaguars down in order.
- After a quiet Eagle inning, Mason struck out his first batter on the afternoon en route to another scoreless frame.
- In the bottom of the second, Bryson Trammell got aboard with a leadoff single. However, a caught stealing and batter's interference ended the inning.
- The Jaguars broke through in their third inning after three straight hits, including a Brennon Wright RBI-single to make it 1-0. However, a foul ball that was confirmed after review gave the Eagles a break, but not before South AL made it 1-0.
- Two free bases and a single to start the USA fourth loaded the bags before Melton mashed a double deep to centerfield that scored two, making it 3-0, and prompting Southern to go to the bullpen.
- Another RBI-double, followed by a three-run shot by Guerin, extended the Jaguar lead to eight.
- A leadoff double from Sean White, followed by a walk, put Jack Myers at the dish with two on. His longest homer of his career at 431 feet to left-center, made it just 8-3.
- In the Jaguars' fifth, a solo shot from Johnson, his third on the series, added one to make it 9-3.
- South Alabama added two more in the sixth after a two-run homer from newly-inserted Miranda.
- A Nico Senese solo shot woke up the Eagles' offense the following frame, before pinch hitter Jonathan Jaime drove home Kaden Thompson from first after he singled to left field, making it just a six run contest.
- In the seventh, a single and walk from the bottom on the South AL put two in scoring position before a pass ball plated one for the Jaguars. Matthews singled up the middle the same at-bat to make it 13-5.
- With two on after the break, Trammell singled through the infield to score one before Christman delivered in a big way once again, slamming a 431 foot homer off the scoreboard to score three, making it just a four-run game.
- After a clean eighth, the Eagles continued to claw back a leadoff single from Grant Jordan set up three straight hits from the heart of the order, including RBIs for both White and Trammell. With the bases loaded, Myers grounded out to score another and cut it to just 13-12.
- In the ninth, McCoy came in from the outfield to pitch and did his job. Despite giving up a walk and single, a double play retired the frame and sent Southern to the ninth.
- Thompson led off by a base on balls before advancing to second off a sac-bunt. Edwards grounded out to advance him to third before South Alabama made a bold move to intentionally walk McCoy, eventually putting the winning run on second after he stole a bag. However, the Jaguars escaped by striking out White to close the game and take the series.
NOTES:
- Trammell's single in the second inning extended his hit streak to now nine games, currently the highest on the squad.
- Senese showed out with a three-hit game, his first since March 8th against Tennessee Tech, and hit his first homer since five days later at James Madison.
- Trammell now has his third straight multi-hit performance and now leads the Southern squad with his .377 average.
- Myers collected four RBIs on the day, including three from just one swing. It's his first career game of four or more RBIs and his first homer since March 7th to call game against Tennessee Tech.
- McCoy made his first appearance on the mound since February 14th against West Virginia in the first series of the year. He threw a full inning in both, but did not give up a run this afternoon, as both he and Jansen Kenty combined for two shutout innings.
UP NEXT:
- The Eagles take a trip to Atlanta for a midweek against top-five Georgia Tech on Tuesday (April 14th). First pitch at Russ Chandler Stadium is set for 6 PM.
