HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ethan Garrett started the contest hot, retiring the first three batters with two of them going down on strikes in the opening frame.
- Despite two one-out singles in the first by James McCoy and Jack Myers, a double play would abruptly end the inning without any across.
- A leadoff double from Bryson Trammell in the second, his seventh of the year, set up the first run of the day after a sac-bunt and a Nico Senese RBI groundout.
- The Golden Eagles responded once again, having three straight reach aboard, including a double, to take the 2-1 lead.
- Southern answered right back in their half of the third, as a leadoff single from Grant Jordan led to RBI base knocks from McCoy and Sean White to take the lead, 3-2. A diving catch on the warning track from Tennessee Tech's Landon Smelser would save another run from scoring and cut the inning short.
- In the fourth, the Eagles exploded for four hits and four runs, capped off by McCoy's first home run in a Georgia Southern uniform that traveled 398 feet to straightaway center field.
- .Tennessee Tech managed to scratch two runs across the next half-inning after a sac-fly and an RBI-single from Eddie Garza would eventually make it a 7-4 contest.
- In the Eagles' sixth, they would have another big inning, which started with Grant Jordan reaching aboard from an error. The inning included four singles that eventually scored four Eagles, pushing the lead up to seven.
- Thomas Burke would complete his second straight inning of scoreless ball on the mound to keep the Golden Eagles silent going into the stretch.
- The bottom of the seventh saw back-to-back walks from the top of the order before Myers ended the game with a three-run blast to dead center to complete the run rule, winning 14-4.
NOTES:
- All nine Eagles in the order would have a hit on the day after just four innings. Additionally, six of them would have multi-hit performances, including a 4-4 afternoon from McCoy and was just a triple away from completing the cycle.
- The 14 runs and 17 hits all were season highs for the Eagles. They also set a season-low with only being sat down on strikes three times.
- Both McCoy and Myers set first career homers as an Eagles, with Myers' first career in his now 32 games for Southern.
- It's the first run-rule victory for the Eagles since May 9th of 2025, beating Texas State 13-3. The walkoff homer from Myers was the first to cap off a run-rule victory since Jarrett Brown on March 23rd, 2024 against Southern Miss.
UP NEXT:
- The rubber match of the series is set for tomorrow (March 8th) at 1 PM at J.I. for Concert Cooldown Day. Don't forget about Daylight Savings this evening!
