Stetson Defeats Women's Tennis, 5-2, On Friday

Eagles next in action on Feb. 6 for a pair of matches at Mississippi State
STATESBORO - Stetson women's tennis collected a 5-2 victory over host Georgia Southern on Friday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Hatters notched their first win of the season, improving to 1-2, while Georgia Southern falls to 1-3 on the Spring. The Eagles return to action on Friday, February 6, playing a pair of matches in Starkville, Miss., taking on Alcorn State and Mississippi State.
Stetson claimed the doubles point from the Eagles with 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Hatters then quickly went up 3-0 with straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. The Eagles battled back, however, closing to within 3-2 with Angelina Mihajlovic's 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, then Evelyn Warkentin's 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Stetson clinched the victory with a win at No. 6 singles.
"We played a good Stetson team and they deserve all the credit for making us uncomfortable for much of the match at a few key positions," Georgia Southern head women's tennis coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Big credit to Evy and Angelina picking up their singles wins in straight sets. They both have been really steady. Today's match came down to execution and being brave during doubles. We left a lot of points on the court today where we had control only to relinquish it. We will absolutely learn from it and move on positively. I'd be nervous if we didn't know what specifically we need to do in order to affect change. We know what it is, and I know the team will be resilient and find a way to bounce back even stronger for our next match."
