HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to take a 5-1 Sun Belt Conference women's soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Dukes improved to 5-3-3 overall and 1-1-1 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 2-7-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the league. The Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 28, visiting Louisiana for a 2 p.m. Sun Belt contest against the Ragin' Cajuns.
On a windy day in Virginia, the Dukes struck first as Jamie Swartz headed in a corner kick in the 17th minute to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 into halftime as Georgia Southern held a 4-3 edge in shots at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles struck exactly one minute into the period as Meredith Pugh's ball into the box found Bri Conley one-on-one with JMU goalkeeper Lili White. White stopped the initial shot by Conley, but Conley was able to get the rebound and poke the followup shot into the net for her third goal of the season.
James Madison would retake the lead in the 65th minute on Jeanette Fieldsend's goal, then the Dukes would clinch the match by tallying goals in the 76th, 78th and 89th minutes.
The Dukes ended the match with an 11-9 edge in shots. White made five saves in net for the Dukes, while Katie Oakley had four saves in net for the Eagles. James Madison held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks and the Dukes were whistled for three fouls and five offsides, compared to one foul and two offsides for the Eagles.
